Johannes Joenperä (b. 1983) photographer and artist based in Finland. He is interested in themes that are related to nature, humanity and science.

Artist's Statement
Koen taiteen avaimena, jonka avulla moniulotteista maailmaamme on mahdollista kokea ja ymmärtää laaja-alaisesti. Taiteelliset ilmaisumuodot mahdollistavat vaikeidenkin teemojen tarkastelun ja niiden saattamisen helpommin lähestyttäväksi yleisölle, esimerkiksi verrattuna uutismediassa kerrottaviin numeerisiin tilastoihin.
Viime vuosina teosteni teemoina ovat olleet mm. sosiaaliset normit, luonnon ja ihmisen välinen yhteys sekä äänen ja visuaalisuuden keskinäinen vuorovaikutus. Minua kiinnostaa taiteen ja eri tieteenalojen välinen yhteys. Mielestäni tieteellisiä tutkimuksia on mahdollista tarkastella taiteen keinoin ja aukaista taiteen avulla uusia näkökulmia tutkimusaiheille.
Minulle tärkeimmät taiteellisen ilmaisun muodot ovat performanssi, valokuva, video, audio ja installaatio. Koen performanssin sateenkaarena, jonka alla muut ilmaisumuodot elävät yhdessä ja erikseen. Performanssissa minua kiehtoo hetkellisyys ja katoavaisuus, ihmistenvälinen kohtaaminen, esiintyjien ja yleisön välinen vuorovaikutus.

Artist's Statement
Art is for me like a creative key you can use to open and explore newthemes or look at old ones in a different way. Many art techniques give metools to dig deeper into themes that interest me, such as social norms insocieties, the relationship between nature and humans, and how visuality is connectedto soundscapes. I’m ambitious to create new ideas from different themes. Maybemy art can convey new perspectives about a theme to an audience and in that wayform meaningful experiences for them.
I think that art and science have something to give to each other. Also,science studies have given me inspiration for my art. I believe that art can opennew layers for research. Art can continue from where scientific studies end,and maybe scientists will have some new creative ideas for their works from artexperiences.
The art techniques I mainly use are performance, photography, video,audio and installation. For me, performance is like a rainbow which gives a limitlessarea for another art techniques to collaborate with, e.g. a video can have anew layer when combined with a live performance. Main reasons for me to have aninterest in performance as an art form are its brevity and disappearance, aswell as the relationship between the performers and the audience. I think youcan’t fully script a performance, there is always a chance for random incidentswhich can totally change the performance’s embodiment, hopefully giving a new meaningfullayer to it.

Johannes Joenperä on valmistunut kuvataiteilijaksi (AMK) Satakunnan ammattikorkeakoulusta vuonna 2024. Hän asuu ja työskentelee pääkaupunkiseudulla. Viime vuosina hänen työskentelynsä teemoina ovat olleet erityisesti sosiaaliset normit, luonnon ja ihmisen välinen yhteys, äänen ja visuaalisuuden keskinäinen vuorovaikutus. Hänen käyttämiään tekniikoita ovat mm. performanssi, valokuva, video ja installaatio. Hän on ollut teoksillaanja yhteistyöteoksilla esillä ryhmänäyttelyissä ja taidetapahtumissa mm. Taiteidenyö (Helsinki, 2024), Taidelaitos Haihatus, Taidekeskus Mältinranta, Kankaanpään Galleria, Valssaamo (Kaapelitehdas, Helsinki).

Johannes Joenperä graduated as a visual artist (BA) from SatakuntaUniversity of Applied Sciences (Finland) in 2024. He lives and works in theHelsinki metropolitan area in Finland. In recent years, the themes of his workhave been social norms, the connection between nature and humans, and theinteraction of sound and visuals. The techniques he uses include performance,photography, video and installation. His own works and collaborative works havebeen exhibited in group exhibitions and art events such as Night of the Arts(Helsinki, 2024), Haihatus Art Center (Joutsa, Finland), Mältinranta Art Center(Tampere, Finland), Kankaanpää Gallery (Finland), Valssaamo (Cable Factory,Helsinki).
